In short

Dynamics 365 Business Central is Microsoft's cloud ERP for small and mid-sized companies, tightly integrated into Microsoft 365 and the Power Platform. It is licensed per user/month (Essentials $80, Premium $110, Team Members $8, annual payment) and implemented via Microsoft partners. Ideal for mid-market companies in the Microsoft ecosystem that want an established, broadly integrated ERP.

What is Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is a cloud-based complete ERP system for the mid-market that is also available on-premise. On one platform it bundles finance, procurement, sales, warehouse and supply chain, projects, service and manufacturing. It is the direct successor to Dynamics NAV, or Navision, and targets SMEs with typically about 10 to 500 employees. Higher needs can be covered via Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations.

The core advantage lies in native integration into Microsoft 365 with Outlook, Excel and Teams as well as into the Power Platform of Power BI, Power Automate and Power Apps. Posting and reporting happen in a familiar interface, complemented by Azure, Dataverse and apps from the AppSource marketplace. Business Central is sold almost exclusively via partners in the CSP model; a direct purchase from Microsoft is practically not intended.

As a market-leading ERP for SMEs, Business Central has, according to Microsoft, over 40,000 customers in more than 250 countries and is widely adopted in the DACH mid-market, also thanks to the Navision succession. It is particularly suited to Microsoft-oriented mid-market companies with an existing Microsoft 365 environment. In the DACH region, it should be noted that a DATEV connection is not included in the standard and is only provided via certified partner extensions, including SKR03/SKR04.

Who is Dynamics 365 Business Central for?

Mid-sized companies that already use Microsoft 365 and are looking for an integrated, cloud-capable ERP with a familiar interface and a broad partner ecosystem.

  • Mid-market companies with an existing Microsoft 365 environment
  • Companies migrating from Dynamics NAV/Navision
  • Trade, services, project business and discrete manufacturing (Premium)

Less suited for: Very small businesses with a tight budget and simple needs · Corporate groups with highly complex requirements (rather D365 F&O or SAP)

Dynamics 365 Business Central in the DACH region

Compliance requirements differ by country – DATEV/GoBD in Germany, FinanzOnline/RKSV in Austria, VAT/QR invoice in Switzerland. This is how Dynamics 365 Business Central performs across the three markets:

Hosting & data protection

Microsoft Azure; DE regions (Frankfurt/Berlin) and EU data storage selectable, GDPR-compliant.

DATEV

No DATEV connection in the standard – via certified partner extensions (incl. SKR03/SKR04, posting data service).

GoBD

GoBD support via the German localization (HGB, ELSTER); audit-proof archiving partly via add-on solutions.

E-invoicing (XRechnung / ZUGFeRD)

PEPPOL in the standard since v23.2; XRechnung/ZUGFeRD in older versions only via extensions, ZUGFeRD native from v26.3.

Language & support

Full German localization; support mostly via DACH partners + Microsoft.

Onboarding & implementation

Duration
typically 6–12 weeks, for complex setups several months
Partner
almost always via a Microsoft CSP/implementation partner
Cost
partner-dependent, usually well above the license costs

In practice, Business Central is almost exclusively implemented via a certified Microsoft partner (CSP) who handles setup, data migration and training.

Switching & migrating to Dynamics 365 Business Central

The typical path is the switch from Dynamics NAV/Navision; with a manageable depth of customization, partners estimate 6–12 weeks, in practice often several months. Cost drivers: custom code (C/AL → AL extensions), data quality and interfaces.

Verdict: is Dynamics 365 Business Central worth it?

A mature, broadly applicable mid-market ERP with a clear advantage for Microsoft-oriented companies thanks to deep M365/Power Platform integration. Well suited for the DACH region, though DATEV, parts of e-invoicing and strong reporting are usually only covered via partner extensions.

Frequently asked questions about Dynamics 365 Business Central

What does Dynamics 365 Business Central cost?+

The Essentials edition is around €79 to €83 per user and month, the Premium edition around €114 per user and month, in each case partner-dependent. A Team Member access for read and simple activities costs about €8. In November 2025 there was the first price increase in over five years. On top come implementation, DATEV interface and individual customizations as partner costs.

Which companies is Business Central suitable for?+

Business Central mainly suits mid-sized companies with about 10 to 500 employees that already use Microsoft 365 and are looking for an integrated, cloud-capable ERP with a familiar interface. Typical industries are trade, services, project business and discrete manufacturing, the latter via the Premium edition. Companies migrating from Dynamics NAV or Navision are also a core target group. It is less suitable for very small businesses with a tight budget as well as for corporate groups with highly complex requirements.

Is Business Central DATEV-capable and GoBD-compliant?+

A DATEV connection is not included in the standard but can be realized via certified partner extensions, including SKR03/SKR04 and a posting data service. GoBD support is provided via the German localization with HGB and ELSTER. Audit-proof archiving is in some cases only covered via add-on solutions. For DACH requirements, paid extensions therefore generally need to be budgeted.

Does Business Central support e-invoicing?+

Yes. PEPPOL has been included in the standard since version 23.2. XRechnung and ZUGFeRD were only available via extensions in older versions. ZUGFeRD is natively supported from version 26.3. Depending on the version in use, an extension may still be needed for certain formats.

Where is the data hosted?+

Business Central runs in the cloud on Microsoft Azure. German Azure regions such as Frankfurt and Berlin as well as EU-wide data storage can be selected, in each case GDPR-compliant. Alternatively, an on-premise variant is available in which the data is held in your own data center.

What are the biggest weaknesses of Business Central?+

Sales and support run almost exclusively via partners, so quality and costs are heavily partner-dependent. The standard reporting is considered weak; demanding analyses require Power BI or third-party solutions. DACH functions such as DATEV and parts of e-invoicing require paid extensions. Individual customizations require AL development, which can make total costs high, especially for small companies.

Business Central or an alternative like SAP Business One?+

Business Central plays to its strengths with Microsoft-oriented mid-market companies, since hardly any other ERP offers such deep integration into Microsoft 365 and the Power Platform. For very small businesses with a tight budget or corporate groups with highly complex requirements, an alternative may make more sense; Microsoft addresses larger requirements rather with Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, and very complex ones with SAP. A comparison is worthwhile above all along company size, industry and the existing IT landscape.
