What sets each system apart

The distinctive features that set both systems apart within the segment.

Oracle NetSuite

Oracle NetSuite is the cloud-native ERP suite for the internationally scaling mid-market — as one of the first SaaS ERPs it positions itself between the group-heavy SAP S/4HANA and the Microsoft-oriented Dynamics 365 Business Central, with particular strength in multi-entity operation and real-time group consolidation.

  • True multi-tenant cloud SaaS built "from scratch" (since 1998) with automatic updates — not a cloud "retrofit" of an on-premise legacy like the competitors.
  • OneWorld module for multi-entity, multi-currency, 27 languages and real-time consolidation across several country entities in a single tenant.
  • Broad pre-integrated suite (financials, inventory management, CRM, SuiteCommerce, PSA/SuitePeople) as a single source of truth, included in the core package rather than licensed as separate clouds.
  • DACH compliance (DATEV, GoBD/HGB, XRechnung), however, not out of the box — only via localization SuiteApps and a few specialized partners (e.g. Alta Via), which causes additional costs.
SAP Business ByDesign

SAP Business ByDesign is SAP's genuine multi-tenant cloud ERP for the project- and service-heavy upper midmarket with international multi-company structures – functionally well-rounded and fully operated by SAP, but strategically sidelined, since SAP is removing it from the new-customer price list as of April 20, 2026.

  • Genuine SAP-hosted multi-tenant SaaS with quarterly upgrades on HANA – without needing your own infrastructure or basis operations, unlike the partner-hosted Business One or classic on-premise SAP
  • Native multi-company, multi-currency, and multi-language support with standard localization for ~21 countries (including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) – ready for international midmarket rollouts out of the box
  • Especially strong integrated project and service management (time/expense tracking, project billing) coupled with a deep finance/controlling foundation

Head-to-head: the assessment

Both perspectives honestly side by side – where one system leads and where the other counters.

Oracle NetSuite against SAP Business ByDesign

From NetSuite's perspective, we play in the same cloud-native mid-market league, but are more broadly positioned and strategically more stable when it comes to true multi-entity operations, real-time corporate consolidation, and a globally unified data foundation. ByDesign has deeper local DACH localization and closer proximity to the SAP ecosystem, but loses appeal due to the halt on new customers — making it an ideal transition candidate to NetSuite.

SAP Business ByDesign against Oracle NetSuite

NetSuite is the most direct cloud-native competitor in the internationally scaling mid-market and is often superior and functionally broader for multi-entity operations with real-time group consolidation. ByDesign scores points in the DACH region with deeper local statutory accounting (close to UGB/OR/HGB), a German-speaking SAP partner network, and proximity to the SAP ecosystem (Concur, SuccessFactors, Analytics Cloud). Since both are cloud-only, ecosystem and localization tip the balance – and here ByDesign comes off worse than the strategically stable NetSuite due to its announced phase-out.

When Oracle NetSuite, when SAP Business ByDesign?

The concrete use scenarios in which each system is the better choice.

Choose Oracle NetSuite when …

  • Internationally growing mid-market companies with several country entities
  • Companies that want to replace many individual systems with one cloud platform
  • Trade/service companies with multi-channel and multi-currency needs

Rather not when: Small, purely nationally operating companies with a tight budget · Companies that expect deep out-of-the-box DATEV/e-invoicing integration without additional SuiteApps

Choose SAP Business ByDesign when …

  • Project- and consulting-oriented companies (IT, engineering, consultancies)
  • Subsidiaries of large SAP corporate groups needing a lean cloud branch-office solution
  • Internationally active midsize companies with multiple entities and currencies
  • Companies without their own IT infrastructure team that prefer pure SaaS

Rather not when: New customers seeking a long-term, actively developed SAP cloud solution beyond 2026 (choose S/4HANA Cloud instead) · Small businesses with tight budgets · Businesses with complex discrete manufacturing / in-depth production control needs · Pure e-commerce/marketplace retailers focused on Amazon/eBay/Otto and point-of-sale operations

DACH compliance compared

DATEV, GoBD, e-invoicing, hosting and language determine practical viability in the DACH region – here both systems directly side by side.

Hosting & data protectionOracle Cloud data centers; EU data center (including Frankfurt) available; no on-premise; check data residency contractually.SAP data centers; European tenants are primarily located in St. Leon-Rot (Germany). Customers can choose the country/data center, but SAP always remains the operator. Certifications: ISO 27001, ISAE 3402, SSAE 16.
DATEVNo native DATEV integration; via certified partner SuiteApps (primarily Alta Via). Additional effort – a weak point vs. German/SAP solutions. No native DATEV general-ledger integration; DATEV export and a certified DATEV payroll interface are available via partner add-ons for collaboration with tax advisors.
GoBDGoBD only fully covered with the Germany localization SuiteApp; standard NetSuite does not fully cover HGB/German formats.GoBD-relevant requirements (immutable, complete, machine-evaluable record-keeping) are addressed via the system's audit-proof bookkeeping/archiving; binding GoBD procedural documentation depends on the individual project.
E-invoicingXRechnung via localization SuiteApp or partner solutions, not native; check carefully in light of the B2B mandate from 2025.E-invoicing (XRechnung, ZUGFeRD, Peppol) is available via partner add-ons such as e-invoice4cloud; receiving and automated processing are well established in the DACH region but not fully native.
Language & supportGerman interface available; support/consulting primarily via a few partners. Partner density in the DACH region is low.German-language interface and documents; German-speaking SAP and partner support available in the DACH region. Up to 41 languages overall (13 as standard).

Strengths & weaknesses

Oracle NetSuite

Strengths

  • Leading multi-entity/multi-currency module (OneWorld) with real-time consolidation
  • True multi-tenant cloud SaaS with automatic updates
  • Broad integrated suite (finance, inventory management, CRM, e-commerce, PSA) as a single source of truth
  • Strong reporting/analytics; high customizability via SuiteCloud
  • Good scalability from the mid-market to the multi-tier corporate group

Weaknesses

  • DACH localization not out of the box: DATEV, GoBD/HGB and e-invoicing only via SuiteApps/partners
  • High, non-transparent costs (no list prices, price increases at renewals)
  • Complex, sometimes not very intuitive interface; high implementation effort
  • Low partner density and limited German-language vendor support in the DACH region
SAP Business ByDesign

Strengths

  • Genuine multi-tenant SaaS: SAP hosts, operates, and updates the system (quarterly upgrades) – no infrastructure of your own required
  • Very strong integrated finance/accounting and controlling on HANA
  • Pronounced project and service management capabilities (time/expense tracking, project billing)
  • Native multi-company, multi-currency, and multi-language support for international rollouts
  • Standard localization for around 21 countries including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; localization content available for 130+ countries

Weaknesses

  • SAP is removing ByDesign from the price list for new customers as of April 20, 2026 – no strategic future, no active further development
  • Limited customizability compared to on-premise SAP; deep adaptations only via SDK/partners
  • Weaknesses in discrete/complex manufacturing (no full-fledged MES/PLM out of the box)
  • Smaller partner and add-on ecosystem than Business One or S/4HANA

Verdict per system

Verdict on Oracle NetSuite

One of the strongest cloud ERP suites for the international mid-market, excelling at multi-entity/multi-currency and group reporting. Viable for the DACH region, but local compliance (DATEV, GoBD, e-invoicing) and partner density are weak points. Recommended above all for internationally scaling companies.

Ideal for: Internationally operating, growing mid-market companies with several legal entities/countries and a need for consolidated multi-entity reporting.

Verdict on SAP Business ByDesign

A technically mature, SAP-operated cloud ERP with a strong foundation in finance, projects, and multi-company management. For new customers in 2026, however, it is no longer a strategic choice, since SAP is no longer actively developing the product and is removing it from the price list.

Ideal for: Project- and service-oriented midsize companies, as well as subsidiaries of large SAP corporate groups, looking for an SAP-hosted, internationally deployable cloud ERP without their own infrastructure
